Ports of Call

Ports of Call is the story of two ill-starred lovers who meet in Paris during WWII: Ossyane, the principal narrator and Ottoman prince with a Muslim upbringing, and his beloved Clara, a Jewish freedom fighter from Vienna.

Even more relevant today than when the story was written, Ports of Call is a fable of madness and family ties, of love and despair, of mixed and uncertain identities. Amin Maalouf is able to touch on grand themes and big topics without being superficial or artificial. The historical background — the French Resistance, the breakdown of order in Beirut — never takes over the story. Ports of Call is a masterful story, captivating and hauntingly memorable.
